When do I plant fruit trees?

January 10, 2025

Late winter or early spring after the ground thaws, before buds break. Fall planting works in mild climates (Zone 7+).

Timing matters for fruit trees. Plant too early and frost damages roots. Too late and heat stresses them before establishment.

Late winter / early spring

Plant after ground thaw when seedlings are 6-8 weeks from last frost. Roots establish before summer heat.

Fall option

In Zone 7+, fall planting gives roots a head start. Mulch heavily to protect through winter.
